Improving educational
outcomes and sustainable
employment pathways
"Take care of your children, take a job when you find one, create a safe environment, and send your kids to school."
(The Hon Julia Gillard MP, Prime Minister of Australia, 2011).
However, effective education and sustainable employment can be much more complex and challenging for many Indigenous Australians who feel culturally isolated and unsupported in these areas.
Despite improvements in Indigenous literacy, education and employment the government is failing to meet 4 out of the 6 'Closing the Gap' targets. These 4 focus on increasing Indigenous educational attainment and employment.
In acknowledging that the national priority of 'Closing the Gap' on living standards needs to be more than statements of intent, educational leaders are pushing for reform against age-old strategies for Indigenous education that simply do not work.
